When EA Black Box released Skate for the Xbox 360 and PS3 back in 2007 it was a both a surprise and a reset for what a skateboarding game could be. Provide the player with a big open world to skate around, couple that with a solid set on controls and a simple trick system using the thumbsticks, and you have the makings of a classic skateboarding title.

Skate 3 is a Sports game published by Black box, Electronic Arts released on May 11, 2010 for the Sony PlayStation 3. Kinda playable on Rpcs3 Emulator now on the latest build at the time of this post(0.0.6-7804), It should atleast runs fine (depending in some areas on the game and audio glitches) aslong as your PC specs can handle it. In SKATE 3, teammates can complete challenges together while advancing each other’s careers. From rewarding epic bails and fails with a beefed up Hall of Meat mode to honing your craft with the all-new skate.
Since then the series has seen a sequel which built on the success of the first. It introduced a number of new tricks, the ability to get off your skateboard and walk, and the option to move objects around and create new skating areas known as spots. Upload your spots to Xbox Live or PSN and others can download and use them. All great additions.
I gave Skate 2 a miss as Skate was till fresh in my mind and the thought of playing through an update didn’t appeal, but when Skate 3 arrived I was ready for some more skateboarding action. Where as the second game emphasised skating while avoiding security guards and angry pedestrians, the third game has gone in the opposite direction. Port Carverton is a friendly place for skateboarders. Pedestrians will move out of your way, applaud and comment when you pull off a great move, and security guards–what security guards?
This change of response to skateboarding around the streets is welcome, but also sets up a new challenge. Your aim in Skate 3 is to sell skateboards with your business partner. This is done by taking part in skate events as well as a range of other challenges to get you, and your brand, noticed.
After a short, but useful tutorial section you are left to your own devices in Port Carverton. It’s up to you whether to just skate around the streets or to actually take on the challenges Black Box have created. Freestyling is fun for a while, but if you want to sell some boards, and keep your partner happy, then the challenges are there to help meet your ever growing sales target.
It’s possible to use the almost completely useless mini-map in the top right corner of the screen to locate a challenge point, but it’s much easier to access the list off the pause menu and have your character jump directly to that location. Altogether, there are ten different types of challenge including:
Deathrace
Own The Spot
Own The Lot
Film
Getting Started
Hall Of Meat
Photo
Pros
Team Promos
Tutorials
Getting Started and Tutorials are there to teach you the basics, and act as an introduction to some of the more advanced moves that can be done. Beyond that each challenge type brings something different to the mix. Photo lets you perform a trick, get several shots of that trick in action, and then offers some simple editing tools to frame the best shot for a magazine cover. Own the Spot is similar to Photo except the emphasis is on achieving a certain score, while Own The Lot expands that to an area and multiple challenges within it.
Deathrace is a welcome change of pace and break from tricks where you race against other characters over a makeshift course formed in an area of Port Carverton. The final challenge type to mention is Hall of Meat, which has you jumping off buildings and purposefully attempting to break bones or perform moves like the Cannonball. The crunching bone breaking sounds on landing will make you cringe, but it’s the kind of thing you’ll want to do over and over again for the comedy value.
As you’d expect, there are multiple challenges within each challenge type and they get progressively harder, but never to the point of relying on luck more than skill to achieve. The addition of marker points allows the current position of your character to be remembered so if you mess up a simple button combo teleports you back there saving you time and cutting down on player frustration.
The challenges aren’t without a few frustrations, though. Pedestrians are present when your are attempting to do a trick on a specific object and they have a tendency to walk or stand right on the line you need to take. This can get really frustrating, especially when they appear mid-trick and ruin it. The team-based challenges also suffer as multiple characters are tasked with getting a high score on the same piece of equipment. This inevitably leads to you hitting them and ruining both person’s tricks. It doesn’t help that Black Box chose some very confined environments for some of these challenges.
Away from the challenges customization is a key feature of the game, but not one you are forced to take part in. You can spend a lot of time modifying the look of your skater, and of your teammates when they get unlocked. This has no effect on their skating ability, just the way they look. Additional items such as clothes and board bits are unlocked as you progress too.
There’s also the ability to create your own skate parks and upload them for others to play. Although it’s great to have this feature available, the controls are a little clunky, and you need to put in some serious time to get a park that works. I would rather spend my time skating than creating, but I’m sure this will appeal to some gamers.

Online multiplayer is handled through EA Nation, which allows you to setup a password-protected account to upload your creations, share stats, and play online against others. Away from the single-player challenges it offers an opportunity to show how good of a skateboarder you have become. EA and Black Box see multiplayer as a key component of the game with the automatic login to your EA Nation account happening as the game loads. There’s also bonus points to be had for completing the online component of challenges in the game.
One aspect that is sure to be a hit is the ability to play challenges online with your friends. Like a certain Deathrace? Then select the online version and get automatically matched up with others waiting to race, or invite your friends to come play it with you. The same is true of the other challenge types giving this game a lot of additional play time, especially if you have a few friends playing at the same time.
Overall Skate 3 is a very solid package. The challenges are plentiful and quite diverse offering up many hours of enjoyment. Add in the online component and a few friends and you will have many an entertaining evening in Port Carverton. As for moves, they are available in abundance, and I’m grateful Black Box included a quick access trick reminder section to the pause menu. If you remember and master them all you’re a better player than I’ll ever be.
If you’ve played the previous games and enjoyed them I think Skate 3 is a worthy sequel, but if you aren’t sure then download the demo and decide for yourself. If you’ve not played a Skate game before then I’d recommend this third game over the previous two. Black Box has clearly built upon the solid gameplay of the earlier games and offered an all-round better experience. There’s still a few things that could be better like the presence of pedestrians in challenges, and the size of the arenas in some team stages, but they are really only minor annoyances and shouldn’t stop your overall enjoyment of the game.
